Top Tips for Staging Your Home in Winter

There are a lot of things to consider when you decide to sell your Vail Valley home. Staging is definitely an important aspect of attracting buyers to your home. You want to make a great first impression and give buyers a chance to see the full potential of your home. In the winter there are certain things you will want to be more mindful of when staging your home. A good real estate agent will be able to give you more specific tips and advice for your home. But here are my top tips for staging your Vail Valley Home in the winter.

  1. Snow & Ice and Your Home

If buyers are coming to see your home in the winter, it’s highly likely there will be snow and ice on the ground. Make sure your driveway and paths are plowed and cleaned off. If you have a deck or patio, it’s a good idea to clear those off as well. Be sure to salt these areas as well so that no one has an accident! It’s a good idea to keep a mat by the door inside and outside to catch as much dirt and snow from shoes as possible. If there’s so much snow that it will fall off your roof and in front of windows you will need to clear that too. This brings me to the next point…

  1. Lights!

Natural daylight can be scarce during the winter so take advantage of the little light we do get. Make sure your windows are cleared of snow and keep curtains and blinds open so you can capture the natural light. Light is very important when staging your Vail Valley Home in the winter. If your home is being shown while it’s already dark out make sure the lights are lit. Perhaps invest in brighter light bulbs during this time. Keep your lights on, even while you’re gone, or get some timers for your lights so that they automatically turn on when it gets dark. Buyers will sometimes drive past homes just to have a quick look and a brightly lit home always looks inviting!

  1. Keep the heat on in the Winter

It can be tempting to turn off the heating and save some money while you’re not in your home. But it’s important for a buyer to feel warm and comfortable in your home. If they want to leave after 5 minutes because it’s too cold you’re unlikely to sell your home. If you have a fireplace, make sure it’s cleaned and consider lighting it before a showing. It’s a great way of showing off this feature in your home!

  1. Holiday Decorations

If you are selling your Vail Valley home during the holiday season you should certainly decorate. But try not to go overboard and don’t cover up the important or key features of your home. You want buyers to see your home, not just your holiday decor! But a wreath and some lights are never a bad idea.

  1. Don’t overdo the smells

Scents can be fun to use when staging your Vail Valley Home in the winter. But some sellers are tempted to go crazy with the air freshener or scented candles so I would caution against it. It’s important that your home smells good but keep it subtle and natural. You can certainly go with a seasonally appropriate scent like cinnamon, pine, or apple cider but keep it toned down. Don’t overdo it with the chemical scented sprays!
