It’s been the talk of the town for most of 2019. In March the US Forest Service officially approved the expansion of the race and training area at Golden Peak. Over the summer the timber had been cleared for the 3 new runs and works were completed on the new two-person T-bar lift. This expansion has doubled the training and competition space for the SSCV by adding 68 acres. 42 of these are trails.
Growth for the SSCV
The plan has been in the works for over 10 years but now it has finally become a reality! The SSCV now has access to three more trails and not just any trails… Two of the trails are designed for alpine racing and seem to offer a variety in ability level. This is fantastic for training athletes of different levels. These trails can be FIS-homologated up to women’s World Cup downhill and men’s NorAm downhill. This has provided Vail with another great opportunity for attracting high-level and elite athletic events. The third of the trails is going to become a dedicated mogul venue. The mogul venue will be another attractive site for high-level competitions due to it’s easy access and location near Vail’s base. However, the mogul venue is currently under further review, and SSCV remains optimistic for an anticipated completion ahead of the 2020-21 season.
What the Golden Peak Expansion Means for Vail
The continued expansion and improvement of the facilities and ski runs, for athletes and recreational skiers is what makes Vail an place that people keep wanting to come to. The expansion has also put the SSCV on another level in terms of a training facility. As SSCV Executive Director Kirk Dwyer said, the SSCV is now the “single best training environment in the United States.” This brings with it a huge economic benefit for the town. The possibility of more elite and high-level competitions and events is thrilling. I’m sure this expansion and the growth of competitive skiing will bring changes for businesses and the real estate market in the coming years.
